Ponderings on Chapters 1-3

Now that we have read the first three chapters of this incredible story of survival, I'm sure you're feeling a few things at this point. Tell me how the memoir has made you feel so far, and answer the prompts below. Respond to a post written by a classmate as well, please!

  1. Ismael reflects on the importance of the stories he was told as a child. What stories did your parents tell you when you were little that changed or shaped your life in some way?
  2. What happens when the town where Ismael’s grandmother lives (Mattru Jong) is attacked? (List the sequence of events)

  1. I remember my parents had a dinner party one evening and us kids were sent upstairs to play and give the adults some peace after the meal. I sat at the bottom of the stairs listening in on their conversation, as it was far more interesting than watching the Dark Crystal with a bunch of rug-rats. I overheard my father (who I was always trying to please) telling his friends that I had a "good head on my shoulders" and that I had "a lot of moxie". I was overjoyed and so utterly proud that HE seemed proud of me. Although I had no idea what the word moxie meant at the time, it is one of the best compliments I ever inadvertently received :) It made me want to be better and to maintain his admiration. I didn't realize it then, but it gave me a sense of self respect and the gumption to always strive to succeed.. because he believed in me.

  2. When I was younger my dad would tell me about the protest at Kent State University and the bloodshed that followed. He wasn't there, but he described living through that time and hearing about it on the news. His perspective on the event, and description of how it made him feel as a young adult, made me realize at a young age that being passionate for a cause is an important part of life. He is passionate when he talks about it, which made me care about social issues, as well.
